Blackjack History

Many people will not be familiar with the fact that the game of Blackjack goes back a very long way in time.

Nobody knows exactly when or where the game was created or by whom, however today it is the most popular casino game both online and in ground based venues.

It can be played with a single deck of 52 cards or as many as 8 decks of 52 cards. It is suggested from historical accounts that a type of Blackjack was played by Roman soldiers as a pastime on the long campaigns across Europe, Africa and the Middle East using wooden ‘cards’ with numbers on them.

Been around for 400 years

In Spain a similar game to Blackjack called Ventiuna which is Spanish for 21 was referred to by the famous Spanish author Cervantes in 1601 when he wrote a short story about 2 card cheats in the town of Castilla who were players of Ventiuna.

From this story we can be sure that a basic type of Blackjack has been around for more than 400 years.  It is certain that the French aristocracy played a game called ‘vingt et un’ meaning 21 during the 17th century and that the game was taken to the USA by French colonists where it retained the name 21 until 1931 when the state of Nevada legalized gambling.

In order to draw people into casinos to play the game of 21 a special bet was offered to players who had a hand with the black jack of Spades or black Jack of hearts or the Ace of spades.

The lucky player got paid out at odds of 10 to 1 which certainly pulled in the crowds and quickly led to the special bet being discarded leaving only the name Blackjack to this day.
